Why are there two names for the Italian city of Torino (the second being Turin)? If English and Italian share the same alphabet, why do they not share the same spelling and pronunciation of names of cities? Surely Italians don’t have alternate spellings and pronunciations of their last names, right? What gives?

There was some recent contention on the plural of “metropolis”.

It is, I’m sure, a frequent experience for anyone who is reasonably fluent in at least two languages, that one is better for expressing a particular idea. Sometimes it just takes longer to explain a concept in a particular language.
Which led me to thinking about language efficiency in general. Do you know if there are [...]

I have a question that’s been bugging me for a long time. An American citizen, I’ve lived in Israel for five years and their attitude towards “swear words” is rather fascinating. Hebrew is a “new” language, revived in part from the ancient “dead” tongue, and so they have collected words from other languages [...]

I usually justify my use of “y’all” (my only linguistic souvenir from living 18 years in the South) by saying English doesn’t have any other useful second-person plural form. I’ve been led to believe that English *did* have separate second-person forms for singular and plural/formal (thou and you), but we sort of lost “thou” along [...]
